Betrayal

Who's to blame for the destruction of Thornfield? Who is the betrayer? Who is the betrayed? Are those roles static or shifting in each novel? Discuss.

Antoinette/Bertha is to blame for the destruction on Thornfield because she carelessly walked around with her candlestick on the 3rd floor and minorly setting things on fire.
I feel as though the betrayer is Mr. Rochester and the betrayed is Antoinette/Bertha. H e willingly took her money and refused to set her 'free' of marraige when he concluded that he did not love her. I dont feel as if the betraying roles in the novels are switched. Whichever way i look at it Mr. Rochester is the betrayer.

  2. I think that essentially Rochester is to blame for the destruction of Thornfield. When you really think about it, he literally drove Antoinette insane and it is his fault that she goes mad. Its kind of a vicious cycle that the men of the mother and the daughter in this book both mostly drive them insane. With Antoinettes mother she was literally driven insane by a combonation of both her son dying and her husband Mr. Mason. The same thing well almost he same thing happens in Antoinettes case except fot the dead kid part. She is driven insane becasue Rochester doesnt love her at all and she loves him so much it really makes her sick. If it wasnt for Rochester making her dilusional and out of her right mind then she wouldn't of thought or did some things. Therefore its his fault that she isnt understanding that its not normal for you to go just burn curtains down with candles and fantasising pools and jumping to your death. I think that the betrayer/ the perosn who is being betrayed vary on which novel you are reading. In Jane Eyre the betrayer and the person who is being betrayed are portrayed as at first Rochester and Jane, then its Bertha and Rochester. In WSS the betrayer is at first bertha then Rochester in the end.

  3. In terms of who did what, Antoinette/Bertha is to blame for the destruction of Thornfield. However, it is not completely her fault. Rochester claims that she was insane, but he made her the way. He even secretly admits to us that he was trying to make her mad when Christophine accused him of having loud sexual relations with Amelie so that she could hear, and calling her Bertha. She didn't deserve to be locked away in an attic. If he thought she was mad, he should have divorced her.
Rochester is the betrayer. He admitted that he did not love her and yet he kept the marriage going. Antoinette is the betrayed.

  4. I believe Rochester is responsible for the destruction of Thornfield because he drove Antoinette to the point of loosing her mind.

The roles of betrayer and the betrayed are both static and shifting in each novel because in WSS Rochester betrays Antoinette by cheating with Amelie and in JE, Bertha misleads Rochester about her family, her and her mothers health.
